Radio

As first clarinet in my college band, I went to all of our football games during freshman and sophomore years, but to my eternal discredit, I never attended a single high-school scrimmage during my all-too-long career as a secondary-school teacher. This may have to do with my coming from a large urban center, where distractions other than movies include choices of what to see including the New York Giants, the Yankees, the Knicks, and sundry sporting events taking place at Madison Square Garden, Shea Stadium and (in the good old days) Ebbets Field. PURE Digital Chronos II review

PURE Digital’s original Chronos scored an impressive eight out of 10 back in 2006. It’s now late 2007 and we have its successor: the Chronos II. PURE has always impressed us with its designs and straightforward functionality and so our expectations were suitably high.

The original Chronos still sells for around £50, while its new sibling hovers around the £70 mark. Is there really any reason to pay an extra £20 for this new bedside contender? Read the rest of this entry »

Intempo TRS-01 review

Intempo Digital made a name for itself a year or two ago with some pretty outlandish looking DAB radios that were styled by British fashion designer Matthew Williamson.

This time around it’s created the TRS-01 — a compact and portable set with a cut down range of features and a relatively low asking price of £40. Read the rest of this entry »

The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources is conducting a fundamental review of radio licensing in Ireland.

Industry experts, Ox consultants, were engaged to produce a written review of the issues involved. This review can be downloaded below.

A period of public consultation followed the publication of the OX Report, including a public seminar on 14th September in Athlone. The purpose of the consultation phase was to seek the views of the many different stakeholders involved in radio broadcasting in Ireland. Submissions from all stakeholders were sought up to the closing date, 30 September 2004. Read the rest of this entry »

Hands-on Review: HD Radio

But there’s a whole other world of free digital radio that lives in the airways. HD radio is a digital broadcast transmitted by FM and AM radio stations around the country. The stations use their existing radio spectrum to transmit the digital signal. Their radio towers have been retrofitted with special transmitters that add the digital content to the existing signal. All you need is the HD radio receiver. And there’s no subscription fee. Read the rest of this entry »

Review: Nobex Radio Companion

Are you ready to rock?! I said…ARE YOU READY TO ROCK?!?! Ladies and gentlemen, you’ve seen it all over the internet, you saw it at the BlackBerry Developer Conference (and win the BlackBerry Cool 15), you’ve probably even seen it on a fellow abuser’s BlackBerry. Now put your hands together and welcome to the stage…Nobex Radio Companion!

Music is my life. That being said, this also means that, like my life, music never rests. There’s always something different, good or bad, right around the corner. Like it or not, I have to admit my BlackBerry hasn’t always been up-to-date, music wise. Sure, I use it as an MP3 player, but if I hear a song on the radio that I like, I have to wait until I go home, search and download it. Raise your hands if you’ve recorded something you like as a voice note for reference. Read the rest of this entry »

Intempo RDI review

The iPod doesn’t have a radio, let alone DAB, so an iPod speaker system with a digital radio built in has to be a good idea. That’s what we thought when we got a first look at Intempo’s RDI docking system. It’s priced at an appealing £130, making it only slightly more costly than alternatives from DAB specialists PURE Digital.

But competition in the iPod accessory sector is bursting with explosive energy and manufacturers need to get smart or get out. Can Intempo take on ‘Podspeaker favourites Bose and DAB connoisseurs PURE, and come out on top? Read the rest of this entry »

PURE Digital Chronos iDock review

Until recently, DAB radios never consorted with iPods — they were two entities, two non-converging markets. But as the iPod still doesn’t boast radio reception, it makes sense for these two parties to hook up and become greater than the sum of their respective parts. We saw it last with Intempo’s £130 RDI system and now we’re looking at the Chronos iDock — a £90 offering from DAB aficionado PURE Digital. Read the rest of this entry »

Installation Costs

The cost of a satellite radio is broken down into two different groups, the startup (installation costs) and the monthly subscription to either XM satellite radio or Sirius satellite radio. Receivers and mounting hardware, the cost of activation are all start up costs. Recievers are available for your car, your home, your computer and now portable receivers are available.

Activation costs are the amount that both XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio charge to start service. Activation costs vary, where $5.00 with Sirius and $9.99 with XM will get you ready to go. Telephone activation is $15.00 with Sirius and $14.99 with XM. Monthly subscription costs then play into the cost, but these depend on some factors. Recent media campaigns are dramatically dropping the cost of installation and activation, both XM and Sirius are offering free activation in some instances.. Read the rest of this entry »

Intempo Fusion preview

Back in December of last year we explored the DAB-enabled world of iPod docks for the first time, with Intempo’s RDI (and two months or so later with Pure Digital’s iDock). The RDI was budget oriented, but we liked it. And now it’s got a fresh little brother called Fusion.

This is a £99 DAB/FM-enabled iPod dock for the bedside, with a built-in sub woofer and portable design. It’ll be on sale from mid October. We’ve got our hands on an exclusive pre-production model, and a couple of features are still yet to be finalised, but let’s look at what we think so far. Read the rest of this entry »
